Agnes Varda Dead - Director & 'Mother' of French New Wave Dies at 90

Agnes Varda has sadly passed away at the age of 90.

The Belgian-born director, often called the “mother,” “godmother” or “grandmother” of the French New Wave movement, died at home surrounded by friens and family after a battle with cancer, her family confirmed on Friday (March 29) to The Hollywood Reporter.

Agnes received an honorary Academy Award, as well as a documentary nomination for Faces Places in 2017, thus becoming the oldest person to ever receive a competitive nomination.

She is known for films including her 1955 directorial debut La Pointe Courte, Cleo From 5 to 7, Vagabond and Jane B. par Agnes V., as well as Le Bonheur and Les Creatures.

She is also responsible for coining the term “cinecriture” (writing on film) to describe her personal cinematic language.

In 2018, the Marrakech Film Festival held a tribute to the director, which was attended by stars including Dakota Johnson and Daniel Bruhl.

Our thoughts are with Agnes‘s loved ones at this difficult time.
