'Grey's Anatomy' Boss Explains Why [SPOILER] Was Given COVID-19 & Reveals What's to Come

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading if you don’t want to know what happened on Grey’s Anatomy this week!

The current season of Grey’s Anatomy, along with many other TV shows right now, is addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and having it be part of the storyline.

In the season premiere last week, we watched while Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and the other doctors at the hospital treated patients for the coronavirus.

Now, one of the show’s main characters is battling the virus and showrunner Krista Vernoff released a statement to explain why they gave the character COVID-19.

Meredith Grey

Ellen‘s character Meredith Grey is indeed the one who is battling COVID-19.

In the second episode of the season, Meredith was hospitalized with the virus and she was seen going in and out of consciousness. She also continued to have visions of her late husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) on the beach. We also learned that Meredith has a DNR medical directive.

Krista, the showrunner, said in a statement to THR, “Last week we felt Meredith Grey’s pain as a doctor treating an early surge of covid patients. This week we begin to experience what it is for her to be a covid patient herself. Over 1,700 healthcare workers in the U.S. have died of covid to date. Many thousands more have been infected. Healthcare workers are on the front lines of this crisis, living through a war for which they were not trained. We saw an opportunity to dramatize and illuminate their plight through the incredibly well loved and well-known character of Meredith Grey. Doctors and nurses are fighting for us and falling for us. The least we can do is wear a mask, socially distance and stay home whenever possible. Meredith has a real fight ahead of her. And … she has that beach. Darkness and light. It’s a powerful season. Stay tuned.”

In a recent interview, Patrick explained how his new role on Grey’s season 17 came to be.
