'The Prom' Movie Cast - See Who Plays Each Character!

The new movie musical The Prom is streaming right now on Netflix and it’s a joyful and uplifting film that is perfect to watch with your family this holiday season!

A star-studded cast brought the Broadway show to the screen and there are also some amazing newcomers in the mix.

The story follows a group of Broadway stars with a crisis on their hands who come up with a plan to resurrect their public images. After reading about an openly gay high school student in Indiana who has been banned from attending the prom, the actors travel to the small town to give the girl a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

The Prom premiered on Broadway back in November 2018 and Ryan Murphy quickly got the rights to turn it into a movie… and he surely didn’t wait long to make the film!

MERYL STREEP

Meryl Streep plays Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony-winning diva who is in need of a career rehabilitation. Streep needs no introduction and she’s a three-time Oscar-winning actress who has shown off her musical talents in the movies Into the Woods and Mamma Mia. She’s definitely giving her best vocal performance ever here!

JAMES CORDEN

James Corden plays Barry Glickman, an actor who just received the worst reviews of his career for his performance as FDR. In real life, Corden is no stranger to musicals after appearing in the film versions of Into the Woods and Cats. He’s also a Tony-winning actor who has starred on Broadway and he’s hosted the Tony Awards in the past. While Barry is openly gay in the movie, James is straight in real life and married to Julia Carey.

NICOLE KIDMAN

Nicole Kidman plays Angie Dickinson, a Broadway chorus girl who has been waiting for her star-making moment after 20 years as a dancer in Chicago. Kidman is an Oscar-winning actress who previously showed off her musical talents in the movies Moulin Rouge and Nine.

ANDREW RANNELLS

Andrew Rannells plays Trent Oliver, a Julliard-trained actor who is working as a waiter while in-between acting jobs. Rannells is a Tony-nominated actor best known for his work in The Book of Mormon and Falsettos. On the screen, he has appeared in the recent film version of The Boys in the Band and on the TV shows Girls, The New Normal, and Black Monday.

KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY

Keegan-Michael Key plays Principal Hawkins, who is supportive of Emma and a huge Broadway fan who is starstruck by Dee Dee Allen’s presence at his school. You might know Key for his work on the Comedy Central series Key & Peele or the USA series Playing House. He has also appeared in movies like The Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Keanu.

JO ELLEN PELLMAN

Jo Ellen Pellman is making her professional acting debut with The Prom! She plays the lead role of Emma Nolan, an openly gay high school student who just wants to go to the prom with her girlfriend.

ARIANA DEBOSE

Ariana DeBose plays Alyssa Greene, Emma’s girlfriend who is not out to anyone else. She is a Tony-nominated actress who has appeared in such shows as Hamilton, Summer, and Pippin. You can see her on the big screen next year as Anita in the West Side Story movie remake.

KERRY WASHINGTON

Kerry Washington plays Mrs. Greene, the head of the PTA who is opposed to Emma attending prom with her girlfriend. She is best known for her Emmy-nominated work on the ABC series Scandal and recently starred in the Hulu limited series Little Fires Everywhere. She has starred in such movies as Django Unchained, Ray, and The Last King of Scotland.

KEVIN CHAMBERLIN

Kevin Chamberlin plays publicist Sheldon. He got his start on Broadway and has starred in such shows as Seussical, The Addams Family, and Wicked. He is well known for his work as Bertram Winkle in the Disney Channel series Jessie.

TRACEY ULLMAN

Tracey Ullman plays Barry’s mom Vera Glickman. She is best known for her work on her comedy series The Tracey Ullman Show.

MARY KAY PLACE

Mary Kay Place plays the role of Emma’s grandmother. She is best known for her Emmy-winning work in the 1970s sitcom Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. She recently earned raves for her performance in the movie Diane.
