Red Velvet‘s Joy is opening up about her unique decision to release a remake album for her solo debut.

During the chat, she spoke about her decision to go with covers of songs, as opposed to originals.

“Last year, I released a remake of the song ‘Introduce Me a Good Person’ as an OST and received a lot of love from it. Many people told me that my voice pairs well with older Korean songs and the company suggested that I release a remake album. I love singing and listening to classic songs from the 90s and 2000’s so I decided to go for it!” she said.

“It was really hard to make the final song selections since there are so many amazing songs from the past. However, we also have to realistically consider the copyright issue when producing a remake album, which are all copyright protected. Fortunately, we were able to obtain permissions from the original artists for the songs that I wanted to sing, which made this remake album possible!” she went on to say.

“When it comes to remake songs, I immediately think of songs from the past. Our Executive Producer Lee Soo-Man also suggested that we choose songs that both the mother and child can relate to, which I thought was a great idea to be able to touch the heart of all generations, so I chose songs from the 2000s. I also love retro vibes – so much so that I want to be reborn in that era if I could. I also felt that films and dramas that came out during that period are very modest and pure. They have something uniquely charming about them, which made me want to include some of those characteristics in the album.”

She also spoke about the encouragement her fellow girl group member Wendy gave her.

“There was a time when I felt a little down while preparing for the album, so I asked Wendy for some advice and she said, ‘When I first saw you, I thought about the possible limitations you might have. I thought everyone would have their limits, but you don’t.’ Every day she would check up on me and cheer me on,” she revealed.
