'Hacks' Creators Talk Season 2 Plans After That Finale Cliffhanger (Spoilers)

SPOILER ALERT - Stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happened in the season one finale of Hacks!

HBO Max just debuted the final two episodes of Hacks‘ first season and the finale ended with quite a big cliffhanger.

The creators of the show – Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky – have given some interviews to talk about the finale and tease details of the upcoming second season.

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder will be reprising their roles as Deborah Vance and Ava in the recently ordered season two.

In the finale, Ava decided to fly to Los Angeles for a job interview and lied to Deborah about it. She arrived back in Las Vegas with just hours to spare before Deborah’s final show, which was planned to be a new show with all-new material that they created together.

Ava decided to turn down the job offer she received as they only wanted to use her for scoop on Deborah, but after Deborah found out about the secret interview, things took a turn for the worse between them and Ava quit. She still didn’t want to write for the new show, but she decided to get her revenge on Deborah by sending the writers an email with the horror stories of her boss.

Deborah and Ava ended up patching things up and decided to work together again, but the season ended with Ava getting a call from her agent about the email she sent. There’s seemingly going to be drama between them in the future!

“They’re in a really good place right now, but there’s trouble afoot. Ava, in an immature impulsive moment sent an email to those British writers, giving all the dirt on Deborah and concerning how far they’ve come, the idea that there’s something floating out there that fully will disrupt that equilibrium of peacefulness and happiness is something that Ava’s going to have to deal with in a major way,” Aniello teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Aniello also teased the upcoming second season in an interview with Collider. She said, “We definitely, I think, know where the series goes. Generally. I think we know probably where Season 2 ends. There’s a lot to figure out between, and I think we have some things we know and some things we don’t know. And something personally I’ll say is that I think it’s really interesting now that people are reacting to it and seeing it and starting to feel a little bit, maybe even ownership over some of these characters in a way that I think is cool. It’ll be interesting to see how that affects our writing moving forward, because we really wrote Season 1 in a full vacuum. No one knows during any Season 1, you know? So you write based on what you feel you want to say, and we’re not writing for the audience, but of course you don’t want to Red Wedding everyone, or whatever. It’s exciting.”

When asked if there will be more series regular actors in season two, Downs said, “I think the audience will see a lot of the characters they’ve come to know, and in new lights, and there may be new friends along the way, especially since we’re going to be at least partially on the road. ”

Aniello added, “Yes. And also, I think there’s also major fallout that we’ll have to deal with, with Jimmy and Kayla and Barbara from HR. So I don’t know exactly what will be in store, but I have a feeling we’re making a trip to HR in Season 2.”
