New Details Revealed About 'Jupiter's Legacy' Cancellation & Why Netflix Ended the Series

A new report about the cancellation of the Netflix series Jupiter’s Legacy is revealing some details about what led to the end of the popular show.

It was announced on June 2, just one month after the show premiered, that all of the cast members have been released from their contracts and a second season will not be happening.

One day after the cancellation, Nielsen released its streaming chart for Jupiter’s Legacy‘s opening week and the show debuted at number one. The show was also in the Top 10 of Netflix’s chart for quite a while.

The Hollywood Reporter says that she series “was plagued with issues from the start” with lots of drama surrounding the show’s budget. Original showrunner Steven DeKnight wanted a budget of $12 million per episode, but the streaming service only gave around $9 million. The show eventually went overbudget and DeKnight was replaced halfway through the shoot amid “creative differences” with Netflix.

The show reportedly spent “an inordinate amount of time” in post-production in 2020 and Netflix had to bring in one of their veterans as a consultant at the 11th hour, though it didn’t help save the show.

A producer who works in the comic book space told THR, “Marvel shows are $15 million to $20 million per episode. If you’re going to make a big superhero show, you need at least that much.”

While a Netflix insider says the show cost around $130 million to produce, others are saying the budget soared upwards of $200 million.

Another reason for the cancellation could be because of the switch in executives at Netflix. Cindy Holland, the former VP of Original Content who greenlit the series, was replaced last fall by Bela Bajaria.

The world of Jupiter’s Legacy will not be leaving Netflix as the streaming service has greenlit the new series Supercrooks, which will take place in the same universe.
