Disney's Live Action Remakes Ranked Based on Their International Box Office Earnings (& 4 Movies Grossed More Than $1 Billion!)

Disney’s live action movies are huge money makers!

From the ’90s to today, Disney has released 17 live action movies, and there are so many more on the way.

The latest is The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey. According to Deadline, the movie brought in $117.5 million domestically and $163.8 million globally in its opening weekend.

The movie’s box office was at the center of some controversy ahead of its premiere. Why? Aladdin star Mena Massoud made some comments comparing the unreleased movie to the one he starred in.

In particular, he implied that The Little Mermaid wouldn’t make more than $1 billion at the global box office like Aladdin did.

That got us wondering if Aladdin was the top-earning live action movie at Disney. We did some digging and compared how much money each movie brought in internationally. You might be surprised to learn that four of the movies have grossed over one billion dollars. But does Aladdin come out on top?

'Aladdin' Sequel In Early Development at Disney

A sequel to Aladdin is officially in the works!

Variety reports that Disney is developing a follow-up to the 2019 movie, starring Mena Massoud, Will Smith and Naomi Scott.

The studio has brought in John Gatins and Andrea Berloff to pen the script, which is not expected to focus on the second animated film in the series, The Return of Jafar.

The flick is “in early development”, but it’s unknown if the stars will return for the next movie.

Aladdin‘s sequel will also not be heading straight to Disney+, but will be going to theaters.

Late last year, there was a rumor that the sequel could be based on Billy Magnussen‘s character, Prince Anders.

'Aladdin' Live-Action Sequel: Everything to Know Amid Spin-Off News for Billy Magnussen's Prince Anders

It was just announced that Billy Magnussen‘s Aladdin character Prince Anders has a spin-off movie in the works, but did you know that Disney is also planning a sequel to the live-action film?

Fans have been upset about Billy, the one white actor in a cast of diverse stars, getting his own movie as Aladdin star Mena Massoud recently said that he hasn’t landed any auditions since the movie came out.

Well, it sounds like Disney still loves Mena as he’s hinted that the sequel is a definite possibility. Reports have claimed that the sequel will follow animated sequel Return of Jafar, though that’s not yet confirmed.

“I don’t think it will be Return of Jafar, but I think there’s a possibility of a sequel, yes,” Mena told ET a couple months ago. “I think they should do one just about the animals. Like, Abu, Raja, Iago and the carpet all get together. Throwing it out there!”

Back in August, producer Dan Lin opened up about plans for a sequel.

“We’d love to,” he told SYFY Wire. “People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar, and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at ‘where’s the best way to go with these characters.’”

Dan added, “we’d love to have [director] Guy [Ritchie] back and get the team back together. If we do another Aladdin movie, we’d certainly love to have him at the helm.”

In another interview a month later, Dan basically confirmed that Return of Jafar won’t be the basis for the sequel.

“We’re exploring lots of different ways that we can go but certainly, fans are saying, ‘we want to see more of these characters,’ but they want to see the next adventure,” he told Yahoo UK. “We’re talking now about where that could go but I don’t think it’s going to be a straight remake of The Return of Jafar.”

Is Naomi Scott Really Singing as Jasmine in 'Aladdin'?

The new Disney live-action movie Aladdin hit theaters this weekend and Naomi Scott gives a breakout performance as Princess Jasmine.

Jasmine gets to sing the brand new song “Speechless” in the film and it’s one of the highlights of the movie.

So, is Naomi actually singing in the movie or does she use a voice double? IT’S HER!

Naomi even says she sang live while filming the movie.

“We had the amazing Simon Hayes, who won the Oscar for Les Mis. So I was like, ‘What a great opportunity to sing live,’” she told Jimmy Kimmel.

“I’m just singing a capella on my own like a crazy person on set,” she continued. “And the worst part is, you can’t really hear yourself, so they can hear when you go off. I wouldn’t want to know what [the crew] were hearing.”
