Olympian Ashley Wagner Says She Was Sexually Assaulted at Age 17 By John Coughlin, Who Died By Suicide This Year

Olympic figure skating bronze medalist Ashley Wagner is revealing that she was sexually assaulted at the age of 17 in 2008 at a figure skating camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In her piece, the now 28-year-old revealed that she was assaulted at the hands of John Coughlin, a fellow figure skater who died by suicide earlier this year.

The assault occurred after a party one night, when Ashley was in bed.

“It was the middle of the night when I felt him crawl into my bed. I had been sleeping and didn’t move because I didn’t understand what it meant. I thought he just wanted a place to sleep. But then he started kissing my neck. I pretended to be deep asleep, hoping he would stop. He didn’t. When his hands started to wander, when he started touching me, groping my body, I tried to shift around so that he would think I was waking up and would stop. He didn’t,” Ashley wrote in an essay for USA Today. “Looking back now, I didn’t understand that his hands knew the way around a woman’s body because he was 22. He was a man. But I was just a girl. When he continued to wander further over my body, I started to get scared because he was so much bigger than I was, and I didn’t know if I could push him off. I just continued to lie there pretending to be asleep, hoping that he would get bored and go somewhere else. He didn’t.”

Ashley then felt herself starting to cry. “I told him to stop. And he did. He looked at me for a few seconds, quietly got up and left the room. All of this happened over the period of about five minutes. That is such a small amount of time, but it’s haunted me ever since.”

Ashley Wagnerthen named him, saying, “I was sexually assaulted by John Coughlin. Over the past few months, as I decided to tell this story, I wrestled with using John‘s name. He was a prominent figure skater who died by suicide in January, and so I fully understand the issues with naming him. But a name can shape so much of how my story is perceived. Without it, I know people will question my credibility.”

She added, “But this is not about a name. This is about the environment that allowed for that act to happen. I want the issue to feel real to people, and for them to understand the dynamics of my sport, where uncomfortable power imbalances thrive to this day.”

Figure Skater Ashley Wagner is 'Furious' With Judges After Losing Out on 2018 Winter Olympics Team Placement

Ashley Wagner is sharing her heated reaction after finding out that she didn’t make the U.S. Olympic figure-skating team this year.

The 26-year-old Olympic bronze medalist was given disappointingly low scores from judges at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Friday (January 5).

Ashley finished in fourth place and revealed to The Salt Lake Tribune that she was “absolutely furious.”

“For me to put out two programs that I did at this competition as solid as I skated and to get those scores, I am furious, and I think deservedly so,” she shared. “I honestly think that at the end of the day, this is how I feel, and I feel like I need to stick up for myself, and I think that I delivered when I really needed to. I think all these girls delivered when they needed to, but I want to be on that Olympic team and I’m really mad that I’m in this position again.”

Ashley finished in fourth in the U.S. Championships in 2014 as well and was given the chance to represent the country at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, but today it was announced that Ashley will serve as Team USA’s first alternate.

The 2018 Winter Olympics, starting on February 8, would have marked Ashley‘s third Olympic experience (she was also a first alternate at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver).

Bradie Tennell, Karen Chen and Mirai Nagasu will be competing for the United States in Pyeongchang next month.

Figure Skater Ashley Wagner Makes USA Team Over Mirai Nagasu

Ashley Wagner is now a member of Team USA for the 2014 Olympics after finishing in fourth place at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships!

The 22-year-old figure skater was put on the team over Mirai Nagasu, who won the bronze medal after placing third during the championships, which is not the Olympic Trials.

“It’s been a long 4 years to this point. I’m so proud and incredibly grateful that I’ll be representing my country at the Olympics in Sochi!” Ashley tweeted after the announcement.

Mirai shared in a statement, “I’m disappointed in the decision. Though I may not agree with it, I have to respect the decision the federation made. And I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me and look forward to what comes next in my skating career.”

FYI: The US Figure Skating takes into account the past three years of competitions before making their selections for the USA Team.
