Regina King and Brian Tyree Henry hit the red carpet at the world premiere of If Beale Street Could Talk on Sunday (September 9) at 2018 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

The stars were joined by Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Teyonah Parris and Colman Domingo at the premiere along with director Barry Jenkins.

TIFF Rising Stars of 2018 Lamar Johnson, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Michaela Kurimsky, Ahmed Malek, Jess Salguerio and Devery Jacobs also attended the premiere.

The film, based on the novel of the same name by James Baldwin, follows an African-American woman sets out to clear the name of her wrongly-convicted husband and prove his innocence.

The 36-year-old actor and Rafael, 32, were joined at the event by Moonlight writer-director Barry Jenkins, who moderated their Q&A following the screening.

Synopsis: Collin (Daveed) must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles (Rafael), work as movers, and when Collin witnesses a police shooting, the two men’s friendship is tested as they grapple with identity and their changed realities in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood they grew up in.

Oscar nominated director Barry Jenkins has a new movie lined up!

The 37-year-old director will make an adaptation of James Baldwin’s book “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

The film will follow “Tish, a newly engaged Harlem woman who races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while caring for their first born child,” Variety reports.

Production will begin in October, and no casting has been set just yet. This will be Barry‘s first film since Moonlight won the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Here’s what they shared about the now-infamous La La Land/Moonlight Best Picture mix-up:

Barry, on the major fail: “It’s messy, but it’s kind of gorgeous…You have these two groups of people who came together for a second. There’s a picture with me hugging Jordan (Horowitz, a producer of “La La Land”) and Adele (Romanski, producer of ‘Moonlight’) has her arm on his shoulder. That’s what the moment was.”

Damien, on the mess up: “Everything looked so energized, I, at first thought there was some kind of prank going on.”

Barry Jenkins and Moonlight producer Adele Romanski accept their awards for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 26) in Hollywood.

The Moonlight team accepted the award after the wrong winner was announced in a huge mistake. The wrong envelope was given to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway and they instead re-announced the winner for Best Actress, which went to La La Land‘s Emma Stone.

“Even in my dreams this could not be true. But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it, because this is true. Oh my goodness,” Barry, the film’s director and screenwriter, said. “And I have to say, it is true, it’s not fake. We’ve been on the road with these guys for so long and that was so gracious, so generous of them. My love to La La Land.”

Barry Jenkins and co-writer Tarell Alvin McCraney hit the stage to accept their award at the 2017 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 26) in Hollywood.

The Moonlight writers won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for their work on the film. Barry, who directed the indie hit, adapted the script for Tarell‘s play.

“All you people who feel like there’s no mirror for you… we have your back… for the next 4 years we won’t forget you,” Barry said during the speech.

“This goes out to all those black and brown boys, girls and non-gender conforming who don’t see themselves… this is for you,” Tarell added.

The director and cast are being honored with the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble at the event this afternoon.

Moonlight is up for a bunch of awards at the Oscars this weekend as well!
