'Contagion' Sequel Is in the Works With Director Steven Soderbergh!

Steven Soderbergh is working on the “next iteration” of Contagion!

The director confirmed during an appearance on Josh Horowitz‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast that a follow-up to the 2011 film is in the works.

“I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion but in a different context. You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ We have been working on that. We should probably hotfoot it a little bit,” he explained.

Contagion became very popular this year as lockdowns began worldwide due to the pandemic, and the cast even reunited for a virtual PSA. See the cast then and now.

Jude Law Was Warned That a Real Pandemic Was Inevitable While Filming 'Contagion'

During the chat, he talked about his role in the film and how it was similar to the coronavirus outbreak.

“There was absolutely the sense that this was going to happen. The great scientists on set with us who had worked with Scott [Z. Burns] the writer and [director] Steven [Soderbergh] were very learned and experienced individuals who knew what to expect. And they all said to us that this was going to happen — and it was a case of when rather than if,” he explained.

“The way they described it, which is exactly as it has happened, just made sense. What’s scary is you learn in a set like that because you’re being advised by experts, but it doesn’t necessarily sit.”

He played Alan Krumwiede in the film, and said he was scared after making the movie.

“When 2020 started, and we heard about what was initially happening in China, what fast became apparent around the world, it rang alarm bells. Unfortunately, I wasn’t hugely surprised.”

“A few years ago a bunch of us did this movie called Contagion, which we’ve noticed is is creeping its way back up on the charts on iTunes for obvious reasons, given what we’re all going through right now,” Matt says.

“In the movie I played a guy who was immune to the hypothetical virus that was spreading around the world. That was a movie. This is real life. I have no reason to believe I’m immune to COVID-19 and neither do you, no matter how young you are. This is a new virus. It’s gonna take some times for our bodies and our doctors to understand it and understand new ways to protect us.”

“In the movie Contagion, I played an epidemiologist trying to stop the spread of a hypothetical virus. To prepare for the role, I spent time with some of the best public health professionals in the world. And what was one of the most important things they taught me? Wash your hands like your life depends on it because right now, in particular, it just might,” Kate said.

“So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, a little bit powerless at the moment, here’s something we can all do to make a difference. And it doesn’t require a medical degree, or a microscope, or a ton of knowledge.”

'Contagion' Writer Reveals What Trump Did That Terrified Him

Scott Z. Burns, the writer of the 2011 movie Contagion, is speaking out about the Coronavirus and the thing that Donald Trump did that terrified him.

Contagion, which starred Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Laurence Fishburne, was about a worldwide epidemic and followed healthcare professionals and government officials as the CDC worked to find a cure.

Scott told Variety in a new interview that he was “terrified” when he read that Trump had recently cut the budget of the CDC (the Center for Disease Control).

“Every scientist who I spoke to when I worked on the movie said that exact same thing to me: It’s not a matter of ‘if,’ it’s a matter of ‘when.’ You can decide that most of the time, firemen are just sitting around. But it’s very hard to start a fire department once your house is on fire,” Scott said. “And so the notion that we’re going to cut these things and we’ll just try to rebuild them when we need them is foolish and dangerous. I was very aware that our Department of Homeland Security had a pandemic team standing by because this is a real threat. The fact that this administration decided to do away with that puts all of us at risk.”

Scott also revealed what he is doing to stay safe from Coronavirus.

“I am doing what public officials say. I’m washing my hands very often. I am avoiding large gatherings. And I think that’s all we can do now until we get a handle on this,” he said. “Unfortunately, because our response was delayed, we’re way behind the curve. And to compound that, you have officials of the government saying this isn’t a problem or this isn’t a bad thing. I think to me, the scary part is, even though you may say that the mortality rate is around 1%, if 10 million people end up getting sick, that’s a lot of people who will die. Most of them, even if they’re old, some of my favorite people are over 70 years old. And we need to take care of them.”

Gwyneth referenced the movie in a recent Instagram post about the virus.
