When 'Grey's Anatomy' Returns, It Will Be a Month & A Half Into Coronavirus, Giacomo Gianniotti Says

Giacomo Gianniotti has opened up about the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy and revealed just how the show is incorporating their coronavirus storyline.

The showrunner confirmed earlier last month that the series would indeed tackle the pandemic in the new season.

“There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes,” Krista Vernoff shared at the time.

Now, Giacomo is expanding on that and revealed to fans that when the season starts, Grey Sloan will be a month in a half into the pandemic.

“It’s going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season,” Giacomo added. “We might have some flashbacks. We might have some things where we’re referencing last season, just to have context leading up. But we are going to have a little leap when we start this season in terms of time. We’re not picking up right where we left off.”

If you missed it, the series just upped two cast members to series regulars.

Three 'Grey's Anatomy' Stars Just Signed On for Three More Seasons!

Grey’s Anatomy fans can seemingly expect the show to remain on the air for several more years because three of the series regulars just signed on for three more seasons!

Kim Raver, Kevin McKidd, and Camilla Luddington all signed new contracts to appear in three more seasons of the hit ABC series and Deadline reports that they’ll get “significant salary bumps.”

The three seasons including the upcoming season 17.

Ellen Pompeo‘s current contract will expire at the end of season 17 and she’s reportedly in the middle of negotiating a new two-year deal!

ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said last month, “I’m hopeful that Grey’s Anatomy stays a part of our schedule. They certainly know that we’d like it to be part of our schedule for as long as they are interested in making more episodes.”

Burke has also said that Grey’s Anatomy will remain on the air for as long as Ellen will do the show!

'Grey's Anatomy' Promotes Two Stars to Series Regulars!

Grey’s Anatomy has announced some big additions for the upcoming season.

Actors Richard Flood and Anthony Hill have been promoted to series regulars for season 17!

“I am so excited to add Anthony Hill, Stefania Spampinato and Richard Flood to the Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy families,” executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff said. “They are huge talents who made a big impact with our fans, with our casts, and with our writers who are eager to write more for them.”

Stefania appeared on both Grey’s and Station 19 and it looks like she’ll be headed over to that show!

Grey’s is expected to return for its 17th season in the fall.

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17 to Tackle Coronavirus Pandemic

Grey’s Anatomy will address the Coronavirus pandemic next season.

“We’re going to address this pandemic for sure,” Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Krista Vernoff said (via EW) about the COVID-19 pandemic the world is currently facing. “There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes.”

“Every year, we have doctors come and tell us their stories, and usually they’re telling their funniest or craziest stories. This year, it has felt more like therapy,” she added. “The doctors come in and we’re the first people they’re talking to about these types of experiences they’re having. They are literally shaking and trying not to cry, they’re pale, and they’re talking about it as war — a war that they were not trained for. And that’s been one of our big conversations about Owen, is that he’s actually trained for this in a way that most of the other doctors aren’t.” About the essential hospital workers, Krista added, “I feel like our show has an opportunity and a responsibility to tell some of those stories.”

Shooting for season 17 has not yet begun.

Here's Why Jo Rebounded So Fast After Alex Left on 'Grey's Anatomy'

It’s safe to say that fans were pretty shocked at just how fast Jo (Camilla Luddington) got over Alex (Justin Chambers) leaving her and Grey Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy.

However, there is a reason, showrunner Krista Vernoff shared with TVLine.

“I’ve had the experience in my life where the pain of not knowing is so much worse than a very painful truth. Jo had so many episodes of not knowing [where Alex was] that even though the [eventual] answer was horridly painful, there was really honest relief [in just knowing what was up],” she shared. “Getting an answer finally allowed her to strangely feel better than she had when she was just in the dark.”

Krista added that “Jo had imagined every possible worst-case scenario, and even though one of them came true, just having the information allowed her to move on.”

“It felt like she had done a lot of grieving for the relationship in the weeks prior to receiving that letter.”
