Canadian folk musician Gordon Lightfoot has sadly passed away at age 84.
The singer-songwriter rose to prominence in the 60s and 70s with hits like “Early Morning Rain” and “If You Could Read My Mind.”
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm that Gordon Meredith Lightfoot has passed away,” his website’s statement reads.
“Gordon died peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 730 p.m. at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He died of natural causes. He was 84 years old. He is survived by his wife Kim Hasse, six children– Fred, Ingrid, Eric, Galen, Miles and Meredith, as well as several grandchildren.”
Gordon made his first appearance in the US Billboard chart in 1971, when “If You Could Read My Mind” reached number five. He received five Grammy nominations during his career.
Gordon was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986.
“We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter. “Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever.”
Our thoughts are with Gordon Lightfoot‘s loved ones at this difficult time.

“You’ve been reluctant to comment about the words and actions of the U.S. president…I’d like to ask you what you think about that. And, if you don’t want to comment, what message do you think you’re sending?” a reporter asked.
Justin then stood silent for an entire 21 seconds.
“We all watch in horror and consternation what’s going on in the United States…it is a time to pull people together, but it is a time to listen. It is a time to learn what injustices continue, despite progress over the years and decades,” he said.
Here are resources and ways to support the Black Lives Matter cause.
