Kate Mara Opens Up About Her 'Iron Man 2' Cameo That Never Turned Into a Bigger Role

Kate Mara is looking back on that itty bitty role she played in Iron Man 2.

During a new episode of Collider Ladies Night, the 37-year-old actress spoke about the small part and how Marvel teased her about how it could’ve become something bigger, but didn’t in the long run.

If you didn’t know, Kate played a US Marshal who serves Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) a subpoena.

“I had a meeting with Jon Favreau for that and they had said to me, ‘It’s a very, very small part, but it’s with Robert Downey and Jon, and it’ll be really fun. And a lot of times they bring these characters back into bigger more substantial roles,’” Kate explained. “It wasn’t a promise, but it was definitely something that was hinted at to me.”

She adds “that’s the reason why I even took the meeting was because I thought, ‘Well, if there’s a chance of it, why not spend an evening working with Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau? Great. I love them both. They’re amazing. It’ll be a good experience.’”

“That’s exactly what it ended up being,” Kate shared. “It ended up being nothing more than that, but it really was fun. And we were shooting until like four in the morning. But yeah, it’s a weird cameo that turned into really nothing. But I don’t mind!”

Kate has been looking back on a few other of her memorable roles, like her part in Fantastic Four, which wasn’t the best experience for her.

The Josh Trank-directed film, which was widely panned and has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, featured Kate playing the Invisible Woman.

“I had a horrible experience on Fantastic Four. I’ve never talked about it before. I married one of my costars, so I don’t regret doing that movie at all. But do I wish I had responded differently to certain things? Yes, definitely,” she said of marrying Jamie Bell, who played The Thing.

“The fact of the matter is that my two horrendous experiences with directors were male directors. Have I not gotten along with a female director? Absolutely. And was it not the greatest work experience? Sure. But there was never a time that I felt, ‘This is happening because I’m a woman.’ Where with the male directors, it 100 percent was only happening with me; it was a power dynamic thing. And on both of my bad experiences, the movies were 95 percent men and I was the only woman in the movie.”

She also spoke about it in an interview with Collider.

“I think that the thing that I always go back to on that one is that I think I should have followed my instincts more. Like when my gut was telling me, ‘You probably shouldn’t let that slide, what that person just said,’ or if you’re feeling a certain way about what an energy is like and how that is affecting your performance. You’re being paid to do a certain thing and if something is in the way of that, you have the right to speak up and say, ‘I’m actually not able to do what I am here to do because of X, Y and Z,’” she said.

“I think that speaking up is something that I think that we all probably learn it over and over again, to follow your instincts and if you’re feeling a certain thing that is uneasy or whatever, there’s a reason for it. And I don’t regret doing it at all, but do regret not having stood up for myself. I regret that for sure.”

She also said viewers shouldn’t feel comfortable watching her new series.

Kate Mara Says You Shouldn't Be Comfortable Watching 'A Teacher'

Kate Mara‘s brand new FX series, A Teacher, just debuted this week and has some advice for fans watching.

“Some people are definitely going to feel uncomfortable watching the show,” the 37-year-old actress revealed to The Wrap in a new interview.

The series centers on a high school teacher who has a sexual relationship with her 17-year-old student, Eric (Nick Robinson).

Kate adds that the show “wasn’t something that we made thinking that it would be a super-easy watch. Comfortable is not the word we were going for.”

“I would say that shows that I am most attracted to and wowed by are shows that make me a little uncomfortable, or very uncomfortable,” she continued. “Watching ‘The Sopranos’ was not necessarily comfortable for me because there’s so much murder and all of those kind of things. So to me as an actor, and as a viewer, that’s not something that scares me, you know what I’m saying? But it’s not a story that we were looking to tell to make people feel cozy. It’s an important story to tell in order to begin the conversation about how common this type of sexual assault has become. So that was more of the goal.”

“There’s that silly like stereotype of it being cool for a boy to have that illegal relationship with their teacher — which is obviously not what we’re saying in any way shape or form in this show,” Kate emphasized about the groundbreaking show. “But I think it is a unique thing to explore it and it was something that we wanted to be very clear about from the beginning, that we were not saying that it was right, that we were always saying this was wrong.”

“[It's] important to explore the story from both perspectives, not just Claire’s, but also Eric’s and how it really alters his life.”

A Teacher is streaming now on Hulu.

If you missed it, Kate recently opened up about her relationship with husband, Jamie Bell. See what she shared here…

Kate Mara Reveals The Most Romantic Thing Husband Jamie Bell Has Ever Done For Her

Kate Mara has opened up about her marriage to Jamie Bell.

The 37-year-old A Teacher actress made an appearance on The Tonight Show this week where she made a rare comment about their 2017 wedding.

“He dances every day,” Kate told host Jimmy Fallon about Jamie, who starred in Billy Elliot as a child. “But now that there’s kids, he dances like a dad. I’ll be doing my lesson and he’ll dance by the screen in the background. You would never know he was Billy Elliot. If he was gonna do something it would have to be months of preparation.”

Kate added that there was once months of preparation for their wedding dance, but just a week before the event, Jamie scrapped it.

“For our wedding, for example, the most romantic thing he’s ever done for me so far, was for our wedding dance,” she shared. “I wanted to learn a swing dance with him because I love swing dancing. It took a lot of convincing because he hates dance lessons.”

“We spent about 4 weeks doing this swing dancing lesson and learning this whole dance and then literally the week before the wedding he was pacing around the room and I said, ‘What’s the matter,’ and he was like, ‘The choreography is just not good enough. We’ve got to scrap the dance.’” Kate added. “We didn’t do it for the wedding. We ended up slow dancing to our favorite Mexican song.”

The couple met on the set of Fantastic Four and married a year after the film’s premiere. They share a one-year-old daughter, and Jamie is also dad to a son, Jack, who he shares with ex, Evan Rachel Wood.

Kate‘s new FX series, A Teacher, will premiere on November 10. See the trailer here!

Kate Mara & Nick Robinson Get Involved in a Passionate Affair in FX's 'A Teacher'

Kate Mara and Nick Robinson start up a heated, illegal affair in the first trailer for FX’s A Teacher.

The two star as the teacher and student who enter into a forbidden relationship.

Here’s the series’ synopsis reads: Beautiful and quietly enigmatic, Claire (Mara) is the newest teacher at Westerbrook High School. Dissatisfied in her marriage to her college sweetheart Matt Mitchell (Ashley Zukerman), distant from her brother Nate Wilson (Adam David Thompson) and desperate for connection, she quickly befriends fellow teacher, Kathryn Sanders (Marielle Scott).

Claire’s life changes when Eric (Robinson), a charming all-American senior in her English class, takes an unexpected interest in her. Popular and outgoing, Eric is the captain of the soccer team and nearly inseparable from his best friends, Logan Davis (Shane Harper) and Josh Smith (Dylan Schmid).

Everything seems perfect on the surface, but Eric is forced to juggle the pressures of school, applying for college and a part-time job, all while helping take care of his two younger brothers so his mother Sandy (Rya Ingrid Kihlstedt) can support the family. Claire and Eric discover an undeniable connection that allows them to escape their individual realities, but their relationship accelerates faster than either could anticipate.

The permanent damage left in the wake of Claire and Eric’s illicit affair becomes impossible for them, and their friends and family, to ignore.

The first three episodes are available on November 10, on FX on Hulu.
