If you saw Kenneth Cole‘s tweet today about Andrew Cuomo and you were wondering why he’s speaking out about the controversy, there’s actually a good explanation… they’re brother-in-laws.

The 67-year-old fashion designer is married to Maria Cuomo, who is the younger sister of the Governor of New York. They met in 1986 and got married one year later.

Cole spoke out on Twitter to defend his brother-in-law amid the calls for his resignation. If you haven’t been following the news, an investigation has found that he sexually harassed multiple employees.

Kenneth Cole is speaking out to explain a tweet he wrote about the late Kate Spade, which he deleted after fans called it insensitive.

The fashion designer tweeted out, “‘I believed that I could, so I did’. She alone didn’t change the handbag world but she was an inspiring accessory. #KateSpade #RIP.”

People on Twitter were upset by Cole referring to Spade as “an inspiring accessory.”

Kenneth later wrote a more respectful tweet about the late designer, saying, “Kate Spade left an indelible mark on the fashion industry and her inspiring life and work will be missed. We lost a true visionary today. My heart goes out to her family and to all she has touched.”

He then deleted the original tweet and explained it by saying in a statement to Page Six, “I often say ‘We may not heel the world, but we hope to be an accessory.’ After posting the tweet, I realized there may have been room for misinterpretation.”

The 43-year-old actress was joined at the event by designer Kenneth Cole, who is on the board of directors of the organization.
