During their chat, Kerry explained how she teaches her kids – daughter Isabelle, 6, and son Caleb, 23 months – about racial injustice.

“I want my kids to know that I am fully present as they’re exploring those ideas, too,” Kerry shared. “In a lot of ways, I have to make sure that I am taking care of myself as I’m having these conversations and, just on a daily basis, doing what I need to do to stay calm and to stay present and stay informed. So that I can really be there for them as the world unfolds around them.”

Kerry continued, “I wear the Breonna Taylor T-Shirt, you know, ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.’ So if I’m going to wear that, which I do proudly, I’d be ready to have that conversation in my house and answer those questions.”

Kerry went on to say that she also tries to be a good listener when she talks with her kids.

“Such a big part of it is knowing who your kid is and as you’re having the conversation, like watching and listening for the cues to be present for this stuff,” Kerry said. “A lot of us remember the moment in our own childhoods when we were first confronted with negative views about race with racism, with institutionalized racism.”

During another recent interview, Kerry admitted that she still gets nervous going for scooter rides with her kids in her own neighborhood.

Kerry Washington Reveals She's Fearful Of Going On A Scooter Ride In Her Neighborhood

Kerry Washington is opening up about her fears amid the current racial injustice climate in America.

In a sneak peek at the newest episode of the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast, the 43-year-old actress and producer opened up about how even she fears going on a scooter ride with her children in their own neighborhood.

“It’s crazy when somebody says like, ‘How dare you, Kerry Washington, have a voice. You’re a so-privileged Hollywood actor person,’” Kerry says. “No matter what I do, no matter how many Emmy nominations, I am still scared at times to scooter in neighborhoods with my kids where I feel like somebody could call the cops.”

She explains “because that cop may never have seen Scandal. I still have that very real fear.”

Kerry also spoke about why people telling her to not have an opinion about these important issues is hurtful to her, and uncalled for.

“Nobody should be silenced because of their job,” she says. “I have to be extra responsible in ensuring that what I say comes from my heart and is me speaking for me and not on behalf of any other organizations or ideologies, which I don’t.”

“When I speak about this country, I speak as a mother, I speak as a woman, I speak as a Black person…I don’t speak as a Hollywood elite. I speak as somebody who’s the mother of Black children, as somebody who had student loans way longer than I thought I would. I speak as somebody who cares about my community and the community that my family lives in, my extended family.”

Kerry‘s full episode on the podcast will premiere on Monday, September 21.

Kerry Washington Sparks Conversation After Hosting Night Three of the Democratic National Convention 2020

Kerry Washington made a powerful speech as she hosted night three of the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night (August 19).

The 43-year-old Little Fires Everywhere actress wore a sharp pin-striped pantsuit for her appearance where she spoke about the importance of voting, diversity and more.

“When I was in 7th or 8th grade we memorized the preamble of the constitution and I’ve never forgotten it,” Kerry started. “The first 15 words of our constitution are, ‘We the people, of the United States in order to form a more perfect union’ … we say more perfect because our union is not without flaws.”

She continued, “When our constitution was written, women couldn’t vote. Black people were considered three-fifths of a human being, but therein lies the work. No one is perfect. Nothing is. But it is the striving towards justice, equality, and truth that distinguishes us. We fight for a more perfect union because we are fighting for the soul of this country and for the fight of our lives.”

The third night of the DNC will also feature speeches from Senator Elizabeth Warren, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, and vice presidential nominee Senator Kamala Harris.
