Adam Sandler Tells 'Kimmel' That 'Uncut Gems' Is 'Different Style of Movie' for Him

Adam Sandler stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night (December 17) and dished about his acclaimed new film Uncut Gems not being part of his usual comedy genre.

“I understand,” the 53-year-old actor responded to Jimmy when asked about the reviews for Uncut Gems, which have been very positive. “It’s a different style of movie. My comedies are light and fun and I love doing ‘em and I get a different kind of compliment to those. I hear ‘Man, I was stoned the other night when I saw your movie,’ you know, and that’s fine. But this is a different style of movie with the Safdie brothers.”

Adam then told the story about how he got involved with the Safdie brothers to do the film: “They wrote it like 10 years ago and I think I was busy and they sent a script in…,” he said. “I don’t know what happened but 10 years goes by and I did [The Meyerowitz Stories] and I’m going over to Cannes and when I’m going over there, my agents kept saying ‘The Safdie brothers wanna talk to you.’ I said ‘Who are the Safdie brothers?’ And they’re like ‘They’re young and hip’ and I thought they were just, like, skateboarders so I was like ‘What do I wanna meet the Safdie brothers for?’ and then I saw Good Time. These guys are incredible.”

Later during his interview, Adam was joined by his co-star Kevin Garnett. “Can you really mess up playing yourself?” Garnett joked. “I’m glad I didn’t talk to you before I did this.”

Adam Sandler Addresses Oscar Buzz at 'Uncut Gems' New York Film Festival Premiere

Adam Sandler suits up for the premiere of his new movie Uncut Gems at the 2019 New York Film Festival!

The 53-year-old Murder Mystery actor attended the event held at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on Thursday (October 3) in New York City.

He was joined by his co-stars Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett, Jonathan Aranbayev, Noa Fisher, Eric Bogosian, Keith Williams Richards, Tommy Kominik, Mike Francesa, Ronald Greenberg, Judd Hirsch, Sahar Bibiyan, and directors/writers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie.

“It’s a definite love letter to that neighborhood, to 47th street and the Diamond District,” Adam told Variety about the film at the event. “It’s exciting when you see it; it’s such a big part of New York. It’s a historic place, and not too many things have been shot there. When I prepared for the movie, I learned a lot about jewelry, and I met a lot of jewelers. I learned a lot about gambling, and I met a lot of gamblers. That’s been around a long time, both things. There’s an obsession with it there that I really tried to learn.”

On the topic of a possible Oscar nomination for his role, Adam said, “I don’t even know what to say; it’s nice, but I just want to do as good of a job as I can. I love the movie, and whatever happens, what can I do? It’s neat that they say that, but what can I do? I really loved every day at work. I worked hard. When I do my comedies, I work hard at those. They mean a lot to me. It was no different than when I did this movie.”

Uncut Gems hits theaters on December 25. Watch the trailer and see set photos!
