Kobe Bryant's Helicopter Crash Caused By Pilot's 'Spatial Disorientation,' Investigation Finds

The National Transportation Safety Board has revealed their findings on their investigation of the deadly helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and 7 others.

The pilot suffered from “spatial disorientation” after flying through clouds and becoming disoriented.

The official definition of “spatial disorientation” is the “inability of a pilot to correctly interpret aircraft attitude, altitude or airspeed in relation to the Earth or other points of reference.”

One investigator said “the pilot doesn’t know which way is up.”

The deceased passengers also include Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Christina Mauser, Payton Chester and Sarah Chester, as well as pilot Ara Zobayan.

The crash took place on January 26, 2020, and on the one year anniversary, celebrities paid tribute to Kobe, Gianna, and the other lives lost.

Our continued thoughts are with all the families impacted by this terrible tragedy.

Celebrities Pay Tribute To Kobe & Gianna Bryant on The One Year Anniversary of Their Deaths

Many stars have paid tribute to Kobe and Gianna Bryant, who passed away in a tragic helicopter accident one year ago today.

The crash, which shocked the world and was just the start of a dismal year, also claimed the lives of seven others: John Altobelli, an Orange Coast College baseball coach; Keri Altobelli, his wife; Alyssa Altobelli, their daughter; Christina Mauser, a basketball coach at Kobe’s Mamba Sports Academy; Payton Chester, a player on the Academy’s team, Sarah Chester, her mother; and Ara Zobayan, the pilot.

Alex Rodriguez was one of the first.

“I can’t believe it’s been one year since we experienced the tragic loss of my brother, my friend, Kobe Bryant. It still doesn’t feel real. Kobe was so much more than just a basketball player and he was destined for even more greatness. His journey was truly just beginning and it still hurts so much thinking about how much good he had left to do,” he wrote. “I miss our conversations. I miss texting about family, business, sports and music. I miss him.

Alex continued, “I’m also thinking about GiGi and her tragic loss, along with the other passengers on the plane. To all the families and friends who were affected by this tragedy, we are all thinking of you. Today, and really everyday, remember that our time is short. Hug your loved ones. Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. Work hard and remember to smile. RIP, Kobe. Love you, Mamba.”

Many fans have also paid tribute to the Lakers star and his daughter by messages online and visiting the many murals located around Los Angeles. You can see just a handful of them in the gallery below.

Vanessa Bryant Says Her Mom Is Trying to 'Extort a Financial Windfall' From Her Family

Vanessa Bryant is putting her mother on blast.

The 38-year-old widow of Kobe Bryant posted a message to her Instagram Story on Thursday (December 17) claiming that her mother, Sofia Laine, is trying to extort her family.

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Vanessa Bryant

“My mother is continuing to try and find ways to extort a financial windfall from our family. I have supported her for nearly twenty years, and she was never my or Kobe‘s personal assistant, nor was she a nanny. I have always been a stay-at-home mother and my husband and I were our daughter’s full-time care givers. For nearly two decades, we arranged for my mother to live in our nearby properties, at no cost to her because she had claimed that she didn’t have any money to buy her own home after her divorce,” she wrote.

“My husband and I felt it was best for her not to live in our home. She watched our girls from time to time, just like most grandparents do. She did not take care of business issues or expenses. She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request. She now wants to back charge me $96 per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers. As of ten years ago, our kids were full time students and athletes and I didn’t have another child until 2016,” she continued.

“Her claims are obviously false but I still tried, repeatedly, to work things out with my mother. Contrary to what she’s saying, I haven’t left my children’s side since the accident except to visit the cemetery to make arrangements. Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast. Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn’t good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries (contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn’t changed) and demanded $5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV,” she added.

“Because I did not give in to her hurtful threats and monetary requests, she has spiraled out of control and is making false and absurd claims. She is now trying to get more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive. She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me. She wants to live off of my daughters and me for the rest of her life while continuing to collect monthly alimony from her ex-husband since 2004. My husband and I have never discourage or kept her from providing for herself. This lawsuit is frivolous, disgraceful, and unimaginably hurtful. My husband never promised my mother anything, and he would be so disappointed in her behavior and lack of empathy.”

Vanessa Bryant recently looked back at meeting Kobe Bryant for the first time.
