Here's How Dick Van Dyke's 'Mary Poppins Returns' Character Connects to the First Movie

Dick Van Dyke makes a very special appearance in the new movie Mary Poppins Returns, 54 years after he starred as Bert in the original Disney film.

What you might not know is that the 93-year-old actor’s character in the sequel has a connection to his work in the first movie.

In the first Mary Poppins, Dick not only plays Bert, he also plays the role of Mr. Dawes Senior, the banker. For the second role, he was credited as Navckid Keyd, an anagram of his name.

In a recent interview, Dick revealed that he had to pay Disney to play the second character. He said, “I had to go to Walt and ask him for the part. He wouldn’t give it to me. I said, ‘I’ll do it for nothing.’ Actually, I had to give him $4,000. I paid him to do the part. And I’d do it again!”

So, how does this connect to Mary Poppins Returns? Now, Dick is playing the role of Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of the character he played previously!

Is There a 'Mary Poppins Returns' End Credits Scene?

Mary Poppins Returns, the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic Mary Poppins, hits theaters at midnight on Wednesday (December 19). But the question is…should you stay in your seat for a post-credits scene?

Well, we can confirm that there is nothing after the credits.

In the movie, decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael’s children through a difficult time in their lives.

That said, there is a moment in the books that didn’t make the final cut of the film, but star Lin-Manuel Miranda hopes audiences will see it one day.

“I hope if there’s ever sort of a Blu-ray, special features — there was a song called ‘The Anthropomorphic Zoo’ that was also in the animated sequence. That was great! We had two huge numbers in a row, so they sort of took the best of that and made the Royal Doulton Music Hall song, which is also wonderful, but I hope they release ‘The Anthropomorphic Zoo,’” he recently revealed.
