Raya and the Last Dragon is still huge!

The Disney movie reigned at the box office for a third week, bringing in an estimated $5.2 million for a domestic running total of approximately $23.4 million, Deadline reported Sunday (March 21).

The overall global weekend brought in $13.2 million from 29 international territories for a total running global earnings of $71.2 million.

There’s also good news for movie theaters in Los Angeles amid reopenings throughout the pandemic: “Moviegoing exploded over the weekend in Los Angeles according to industry reports with the box office capital restoring itself to the No. 1 rank for a $1.05 million take over Friday and Saturday from 75 polled theaters,” the outlet reported.

Raya is also available to rent on Disney Plus for $30.

Raya and the Last Dragon is No. 1 again.

The Disney movie brought in an estimated $5.5 million during its second weekend at the box office, Variety reported Sunday (March 14).

“Those ticket sales, representing a 35% decline in its second weekend of release, push its overall total to $15.8 million domestically. Raya and the Last Dragon has generated another $36 million at the international box office for a global haul of $52.6 million,” the outlet reported.

The movie is also available to rent on Disney Plus for $30.

The Disney film opened bringing in an estimated $8.6 million during its first weekend at the box office, THR reported Sunday (March 7).

The film’s soft landing was “likely due to the refusal of several key chains — including giant Cinemark Theatres — to carry the fantasy-adventure. That’s because they wanted more generous terms since Raya debuted simultaneously on Disney+ for $30,” according to the outlet.

Overseas, Raya and the Last Dragon opened to $17.6 million from 32 markets for a global total of $26.2 million.

Critics definitely think the movie is worth seeing as it currently has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Did you know that Kelly Marie Tran wasn’t the original choice to play Raya in the new Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon?

Disney originally announced that Degrassi actress Cassie Steele would be playing the role and she even made an appearance on stage at D23 in 2019 alongside Awkwafina and the film’s creative team. (See photos from that event in the gallery)

Not much was heard about the project for a full year after that appearance, but then news broke that Kelly would be replacing Cassie in the movie.

The film’s producer Osnat Shurer recently spoke about what led to the casting change.

Raya and the Last Dragon is set to release on Disney+ and in select theaters on Friday, March 5 – but Cinemark won’t be one of them.

Deadline is reporting that the theater chain has opted not to host the animated flick at all.

The site says that the reasoning stems from Disney’s rental terms for the movie.

“In the current operating environment, we are making near-term booking decisions on a discrete, film-by-film basis, focusing on the long-term benefit of exhibitors, studios and moviegoers,” Cinemark relayed in a statement about the decision.

They added, “While we are having conversations with The Walt Disney Company, we have not yet reached agreeable licensing terms for Raya and the Last Dragon. As we continue to work with our studio partners, we remain optimistic that we will reach mutually beneficial terms that will provide moviegoers the opportunity to see the exciting film lineup in our theatres.”

You can still screen Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+ for a fee of $30 on the premiere date, or at another theater chain.

It’s assumed that Raya and the Last Dragon will also be available for free on Disney+ after a couple of months, just like the live action version of Mulan.

If you missed it, star Kelly Marie Tran opened up about recording the dialogue for the movie during the pandemic.

Kelly Marie Tran looks like a real-life princess while sitting down for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live to talk about playing a Disney princess.

The 32-year-old actress, who is best known for playing Rose Tico in the Star Wars movies, opened up about her new animated movie Raya and the Last Dragon.

Kelly filmed the movie in the middle of the pandemic and revealed that all of her dialogue was actually recorded at her home.

“I recorded in a makeshift fort at my boyfriend’s apartment, which was made of sound blankets taped to the wall with duct tape. Glamorous! I remember there were days when there was construction happening, my internet was cutting out, there was always something going on,” she said.

The movie will be in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on March 5.
