Regina King Brings Decade Long Dream To Life & Will Star, Produce Movie About Shirley Chisholm

Regina King will bring Shirley Chisholm to the big screen in a new movie, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The 50-year-old Oscar winning actress and director has plans to star as the iconic politician, who was the first Black congresswoman.

Regina will also produce the pic, titled Shirley.

“Shirley Chisholm’s fearless determination has been an inspiration to so many of us, and with this film, we hope to inspire many generations to come,” Regina shared in a statement about the flick. “To collaborate once again with my friend and mentor, John Ridley, and the team at Participant, makes this decade-long journey even sweeter.”

Shirley will give viewers an intimate and behind-the-scenes look at her life, and her groundbreaking run for president as a democrat in 1972.

In an interview from 2012, Regina opened up about her hopes to one day play Shirley on screen.

“The good part is I have time to play her because she lived a long time and did so much at different parts of her life,” she shared with Daily Beast. “Plus, as time goes by, there are so many different avenues to get the film made. So many options that weren’t available even five years ago whether it be TV, video, or whatever.”

Regina is just coming off a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. Just before her appearance on the show, something sweet occurred.

Regina King & 'Saturday Night Live' Poke Fun at Gorilla Glue Girl - Watch Now!

Regina King is making her Saturday Night Live hosting debut!

The 50-year-old Oscar winner hosted the sketch comedy show for the first time on Saturday (February 13).

In one of the sketches, Regina poked some fun at the controversy surrounding Gorilla Glue after a woman sprayed the glue on her hair and had to have it surgically removed.

In the sketch, Regina and Kenan Thompson made a lawsuit ad for victims to tell their stories about how they were wronged by Gorilla Glue.

“We’ve all been there: you ran out of hair product and you use Gorilla Glue instead,” Regina began, while she had a chunk of her hair standing straight up because she used the glue.

“And it turned your beautiful mane into a hard candy shell….if this happened to you, you are not alone and you are not alone. Fact: as many as one people fall victim to using Gorilla Glue as a beauty product,” Regina continued, noting that victims “deserve compensation.”

SNL cast members then started sharing their testimonials on how they are victims of Gorilla Glue.

Golden Globes 2021 Nominations Include a Historic Amount of Female Directors

The 2021 Golden Globes are making long overdue history.

After being called out in years past for the lack of nominated women directors, the awards show recognized female filmmakers more than ever by nominating three women in the Best Director category: Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Regina King for One Night in Miami.

The three directors will compete against David Fincher for Mank and Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

It’s the first time that more than one woman has been recognized in the best director category at the Golden Globes. Previously, a woman had only been nominated seven times since the first ceremony was held in 1944.

“In Hollywood, female filmmakers are still vastly underrepresented. Women accounted for 16% of directors working on the 100 highest-grossing films in 2020, an improvement from the 12% in 2019 and the 4% in 2018. Yet it’s a sign that the entertainment industry falls far behind on gender parity,” Variety noted.

Chloe’s nomination also makes her the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for best director, and Regina‘s nomination makes her the second Black woman to be nominated.

For now, Barbra Streisand is the only women to ever win the Golden Globe for best director.

Regina King Shares Thoughts on Turning 50 Next Week!

Regina King will be celebrating a big birthday next week and she’s opening up about the milestone!

The Oscar and Emmy-winning actress will be turning 50 on January 15 and she chatted with British Vogue about reaching the age.

“I feel like I’m so much more interesting now, as a soon to be 50 year old woman, than I was at 25,” Regina said. “I can bring so much more to the table. I think that’s the same for all people. You may not have the stamina that you had at 25, but what you know now? So much better.”

Regina also talked about the Academy’s efforts to increase visibility of under-represented groups on screen and diversity among crews.

“I hope that it will encourage people to broaden their perspective and make for richer storytelling,” she said. “The Oscars, at the end of the day, were designed for promotion, and obviously I’m not taking away that it’s also to honor filmmakers and artists, but it was the intent with these awards shows to boost ticket sales.”
