'Scandal' Officially Ending with Season 7, Shonda Rhimes Releases Statement

It’s official – Kerry Washington‘s hit series Scandal will be ending after season seven, which will air during the 2017-18 television season.

The news was rumored last week, but ABC finally confirmed it leading up to the network’s upfronts event on Tuesday (May 16).

“Deciding how to end a show is easy,” Scandal creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes said in a statement. “Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say: ‘This is it?’ Not so much. So, next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”

ABC's Hit 'Scandal' Set to End After Season 7

ABC’s hit show Scandal is reportedly ending after its upcoming seventh season.

According to THR, the Shonda Rhimes drama, which stars Kerry Washington, will announce the news during the network’s upfront presentation next week.

While ABC, producers at ABC Studios and Shondaland declined to comment on the news, Shonda has previously has been vocal about the show’s uncertain future.

“I used to know how it ended, and then Donald Trump was elected. We had a destination, and I don’t know if that’s our destination anymore,” Shonda told THR earlier this year.

The show’s current season even had to abandon a planned storyline that featured Russians hacking the presidential election when the plot line hit too close to home.

Scandal has been on the air since 2012.

Kerry Washington Wasn't ABC's Original Choice to Play Olivia Pope on 'Scandal'

The cast and creative team of ABC’s Scandal sat down for an interview with THR amid their 100th episode celebration – and a big reveal was made.

Apparently, ABC wanted Connie Britton for the role, and Shonda Rhimes and others on the team fought for a black actress to star. The role obviously went to Kerry Washington, who has played the role since day one!

“Nothing felt more important than the sense of outsiderness. I didn’t know that there hadn’t been a drama series with a leading black woman for 37 years. When the show got picked up [to pilot], I got a phone call from somebody who said, ‘This would be the perfect show for Connie Britton.’ I said, ‘It would be, except Olivia Pope is black,’” Shonda told THR.

“The network was reading us their top choices, and it was Connie and all white women. I panicked. Somebody finally piped up, ‘We’re going to have to redo this list,’” Linda Lowy, the casting director, added. “We tested Kerry, Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose. It was Kerry from the moment I took her to meet Shonda.”

Meanwhile, Kerry added, “This would have been a great role for Connie Britton!”
