Emmy Rossum Was Supposed To Return For 'Shameless' Series Finale

Emmy Rossum‘s return to Shameless was unfortunately nixed by the pandemic.

The Showtime series’ showrunner, John Wells, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about what they had planned and how the pandemic ruined it all.

“We were trying to get Emmy — and Emmy wanted to come back… We wanted her to return and had some storylines about her coming back and she wanted to do it,” he shared, however, “based on what was going on with the pandemic, when we were planning it… the quarantines went back into effect between New York [where Rossum resides] and Los Angeles [where Shameless films] and it was impossible to figure out how to get her back.”

John said that not having her back was a big disappointment, calling it “a very minor but sad result of everything that’s happened in the pandemic.”

“Final episode tonight,” Emmy wrote along with a photo from the premiere. “Here is a picture taken eight years ago during our pilot. Today, 110 episodes later, I am filled with gratitude for my shameless family and for our faithful audience. I’ll be watching with love and can’t wait to see what comes next. ❤️”

Emmy has been playing Fiona Gallagher since Shameless premiered in 2011. Back in August 2018, Emmy shocked fans by announcing that she would be leaving the show after the ninth season.

Emmy‘s final episode of Shameless airs tonight, Sunday, March 10 at 9pm ET on Showtime.

Emmy Rossum Is Leaving 'Shameless' After Season 9 - Read the Statements

Emmy Rossum‘s upcoming ninth season on Shameless will be her last, Just Jared can confirm.

Shameless‘ executive producer and showrunner John Wells confirmed the news in a statement after Emmy hinted in a note to fans that she would be leaving the role of Fiona Gallagher behind.

Emmy Rossum will forever be part of the Shameless family. She has been integral to the show’s success, from her wonderful portrayal of Fiona to her leadership role on set, as well as directing multiple episodes of the series. We are hard at work now creating a season nine finale for Shameless which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done,” John Wells said. “It is always bittersweet when an ensemble member decides to move out of the proverbial house, but our door will always remain open for Fiona to return home for a visit, or to move back in. I look forward to continuing the stories of this wildly unpredictable family and all of us on Shameless will miss Emmy and her wonderful Fiona.”

Is Emmy Rossum Leaving 'Shameless'? Her Note to Fans Is Sparking Questions!

Emmy Rossum may be leaving Shameless! Emmy wrote to her fans that is making everyone think she’s officially out of the Showtime series.

“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift,” Emmy wrote on her Facebook page. “There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic. She is a mother lion, fierce, flawed and sexually liberated. She is injured, vulnerable, but will never give up. She is living in an economic depression, but refuses to be depressed. She is resourceful. She is loyal. She is brave. I knew it the second I read the pilot script, this was different, this was special. … Quite simply, the last eight years have been the best of my life.”

She continued, “I know you will continue on without me, for now,” she writes. “There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”

Emmy has starred on the show since it premiered in 2011. No official word from Showtime has come in just yet.

This news comes almost two years after Emmy requested equal pay on the show.
