Stephan James Reflects on Rise to Fame & How He Stays Present

Stephan James is on the cover of Variety‘s Power of Young Hollywood issue, out now.

Here’s what the 25-year-old If Beale Street Could Talk actor had to say…

On staying present and his quickly rising fame: “I think I’m learning to be more present. Oftentimes when there’s so much happening around you, you got to remember to acknowledge the space you’re in. I just remember being in a hotel room in Paris or London or somewhere, taking a deep breath and being like, ‘Wow. What a ride!’ I’m living out my dreams. Literally manifesting these things, and people are seeing it and appreciating it.”

On inclusive representation in Hollywood: “To say that we’ve made progress would be true. To say that we’re completely there would probably be a lie. Certainly, there’s been a lot of strides in the elevation of diversity, and that’s not only with people of color but with women too.”

On his shy demeanor: “I’m pretty reclusive, so I don’t put my personal life out there.”

On studying criminal forensic psychology at Toronto’s Jarvis Collegiate Institute: “I’ve always been into why criminals do what they do. Now with my career, maybe one day I’ll just be able to play a forensic psychologist. Any casting directors out there?”

Winnie Harlow & Stephan James Open Up About Fame & Hollywood

Winnie Harlow and Stephan James are on the cover of Elle Canada‘s September 2019 issue, out on August 5.

Here’s what the 25-year-old Canadian model and the 25-year-old Canadian actor had to say…

Winnie, on fame: “No matter where I go in the world, whenever people are screaming or anything like that, I actually get anxiety from it…I almost get kind of scared. I think that people forget that we are strangers. It’s never going to be normal for people to be screaming. I’ll never get used to people always wanting pictures. Sometimes I want to wear my [hair] bonnet to the drugstore and pick up tampons. I don’t want to have to—have to—get ready and do my hair, do my makeup. Nobody wants to. You want to just walk outside without a bra…and go pick up some chips.”

Winnie, on being outspoken: “I’d rather go to sleep being proud that I stood up for myself and didn’t put myself in an uncomfortable situation—at work, in a relationship, whatever part of my life. I’ve realized that my happiness and my opinion of myself are more important than whatever anyone else has to say.”

Stephan, on wanting to talk about things other than diversity:Miles Teller gets to talk about acting, and I’m talking about diversity. What separates me from him other than the fact that I’m black? I’ve worked on important projects like these actors have…and when I speak publicly, the conversation is often about diversity and the change in the industry. I’m happy and proud to be a part of that, but when are we going to talk about the craft?”

Hugh Grant Joins Richard Madden, Stephan James & More For 'THR's Drama Actors Roundtable Issue

Hugh Grant joins Stephan James, Diego Luna, Richard Madden, Billy Porter and Sam Rockwell on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s drama actor roundtable issue, available now.

Here’s what the group of actors had to share with the mag:

Hugh on being known for doing only romantic comedies: “After Four Weddings, and the world was my oyster, I should’ve made interesting decisions and done different stuff. Instead, I repeated myself almost identically about 17 times in a row…I’ve gotten too old and ugly and fat to do them anymore, so now I’ve done other things and I’ve got marginally less self-hatred.”

Stephen on when he knew he made it: “I found myself in the White House. Barack and Michelle Obama invited us for a special screening of Selma. And I remember when I got the email, I sent it straight to my junk because I thought it was fake. Literally, the email said, ‘The White House.’ And you want my passport and my Social Security? Yeah, no way. A week later, I’m in the White House theater with Michelle, and she’s like, ‘The popcorn is over there, make yourself at home.’”

Diego on how directing changed him as an actor: “Directing brought me patience. I used to be a pain in the ass, but with directing, suddenly you are telling the story of others and trying to read a perspective and a point of view and to honor that point of view, and it’s exhausting. And sometimes you work with assholes and you didn’t know it before and you have to keep going and get to the end. After I directed my first film, I phoned a few directors [I'd worked with], saying, ‘I’m sorry.’ But it changes once you go through that process of actually having to answer every question and sound secure to convince everyone I knew what I wanted when you [really] don’t. It’s impossible.”
