Watchmen was the big winner in the limited series and TV movie categories at the 2020 Emmy Awards!

The HBO show took home the award for Outstanding Limited Series and 10 other awards this year from 26 nominations.

On Sunday (September 20), during the Primetime Emmys, the show also won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Regina King and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Earlier in the week, the Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies handed out awards in the creative fields.

Watchmen won for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie or Special, Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited Series or Movie, Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series or Movie, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series or Movie.

HBO has made its acclaimed series, Watchmen, free to watch for the entire weekend!

The network released a statement about the special airing, which started today (June 19) and will go through to Sunday, June 21 on HBO.com and Free On Demand.

“HBO is proud to offer all nine episodes for free of this timely, poignant series that explores the legacy of systemic racism in America,” the release read.

Set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Watchmen joins a few other movies that are free to rent for the month, including Selma and Just Mercy, which can educate on systemic racism in the country.

HBO has made the decision to reclassify its series Watchmen to a limited series moving forward.

The network has announced that season one of the hit show will no longer compete as a “drama series” at awards shows and instead will be considered a “limited series.” This includes “any possible future installments” as well.

“We discussed with the producers and felt limited series was the most accurate representation of the show and any possible future installments,” the network said in a statement (via Variety).

Executive producer and showrunner Damon Lindelof basically shot down any hope for future seasons in previous interviews, but he has hinted that there’s still a chance he’d return for more installments.

Watchmen was one of the best-reviewed new shows of 2019, but fans hoping to get more episodes will be disappointed to find out that a second season will almost definitely not happen.

Damon Lindelof, the creator of the series, has expressed that he’s not interested in returning for a second season and HBO is not interested in making more seasons without him.

“It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a Fargo, True Detective (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of Watchmen, but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do,” HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told USA Today.

Damon has said he gave his blessing to HBO to pursue future seasons, but it sounds like that won’t happen without him.

Bloys added, “It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.”

Watchmen is a modern-day reimagining of Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel about masked vigilantes. With Game of Thrones getting ready to wrap up, it looks like there’s a new great drama in store on the channel!

Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and more star in the series.

The show is set to premiere sometime this Fall.

Regina King and Don Johnson will star in the upcoming Watchmen pilot for HBO!

Damon Lindelof is creating the new series and he previously worked with Regina on his show The Leftovers!

Also joining the cast are Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard, according to Variety. No details about the characters have been announced yet.

Lindelof took to Instagram this week to tell fans about his vision for the series. It will not be a re-telling of the graphic novel, but instead tell a new story with new characters existing in the same universe.

“Some of the characters will be unknown,” he said. “New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”
