Wentworth Miller made headlines last year when he said that he is done playing straight characters and now he’s opening up about the roles he will take in the future.

The 48-year-old actor just returned to Law & Order: SVU as ADA Isaiah Holmes, the first LGBTQ district attorney on the show.

“I have things in common with Isaiah but we’re not the same person. Obviously. I had things in common with [Prison Break's] Michael Scofield too. What feels more truthful maybe, more authentic about Isaiah is I don’t have to spend time servicing straightness. Straight relationships,” Wentworth said in an interview with ET. “Acting is investigating. For me. Mapping new territory. Articulating things I don’t get to articulate in my day-to-day. Mapping straightness, at this point… feels like a dead end.”

Wentworth was also asked if he’s interested in telling any specific stories in the future.

“Sure. I’d like to tell — to watch — more stories where gay characters are informed by their struggles, but not defined. Not getting sacrificed so straight characters can enjoy some kind of epiphany,” Wentworth said. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.”

He added, “It’s so important queer audiences — queer kids — see stories that don’t center suffering. See us empowered, in positions of authority. Moving through the world with purpose. Confidence. Dignity. It makes it easier to imagine those things are available to us in real life too.”

Wentworth recently reacted to fans wanting his Prison Break character to be gay.

Earlier this week, the 48-year-old actor, who is openly gay, said that he is “officially” done playing Michael Scofield in any possible Prison Break reboots because he doesn’t want to play straight characters anymore.

After his post, many fans urged Prison Break to make Michael gay, but Wentworth is not down for that suggestion.

“Forgive me – I need to put my finger on something. In and around the ‘reveal’ I’m gay IRL, don’t wish to play straight parts etc., I saw dozens of comments suggesting Michael leave Sara for T-bag. Or that T-bag will be “looking” for Michael/me,” Wentworth wrote on Instagram on Saturday (November 21).

“Is it possible, to some folks, T-Bag = ‘gay’ rep on PB? Maybe the ONLY rep on TV in their part of the world?” Wentworth wrote. “Forget the homophobes + zealots (bec f–k them) – for the queer kids, the queer adults who will never come out bec coming out = death in their part of the world… is T-bag the best they can expect?”

Wentworth then went on to call out Hollywood for not telling more gay stories.

“I’ve said one of the lies Hollywood tells is the screen is sacred and actors are gods. It isn’t and they aren’t,” Wentworth went on. “Storytelling is sacred. Older than civilization, it’s how we try and make sense of where we’ve been. Are. Where we’re going. Hollywood is just the shiny straw thru which the sacred is (currently) channeled. Stories matter. Balanced, responsible storytelling matters. You never know who’s watching. Or where.”

He continued: “‘Dude. Lighten up. It’s a show.’ Etc. I hear you. AND Hollywood is never not sending messages. IMO. Even when we don’t think what we’re watching has A Message, messages are being sent. About gender, sex, race, dating, power, politics…”

Wentworth then admitted to taking on certain roles just for a paycheck, but now he wants to take on roles where he can tell a story that isn’t told over and over again.

“A lot of folks in Hollywood don’t want to accept this. IMO. How fast – how far – their stories fly,” Wentworth added. “A lot of folks (yes, I’ve been one) check out and cash checks, turn blind eyes to messages sent. I see the impact on this page. Many experience it IRL.”

“‘We’re makin’ fast food here,’ a producer said to my co-star on another ‘genre’ show (not PB), revealing contempt for the material AND audience,” Wentworth said. “I don’t mind a little fast food in my diet. It’s an issue if my diet is exclusively fast food. It’s an issue if a large percentage of your audience only consumes fast food shows. We can’t assume @disclosuredoc et al. are also on the menu (or even available).”

He concluded: “Are fast food shows Hollywood’s best chance to send messages that evolve/expand, add nutrition to less-than-ideal diets? If so, I’d argue those shows become MORE important, not less. Deserve more respect. Nuance. Intention. Better representation. Because their audiences do too. – W.M. 🏳️‍🌈”

If you missed it, TVLine recently revealed that Wentworth will be reprising his role as Isaiah Holmes on Law & Order: SVU for an upcoming episode set to air in early 2021.

Prison Break fans can rule out another return of the series because Wentworth Miller says he is done with the show.

The 48-year-old actor, who is openly gay, took to Instagram this weekend to tell fans that he no longer will play straight characters.

Wentworth wrote a post in response to some negative comments he’s been seeing on his page and how he plans on removing the option to comment on his posts.

“I’m not concerned for myself. I can’t be ‘bullied’ in this space. I have too much power. ‘Delete. Block. Deactivate.’ Etc. But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea… I don’t want them exposed to bullsh-t,” Wentworth said.

He continued, “On a related note… I’m out. Of [Prison Break]. Officially. Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”

“If you’re hot and bothered [because] you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one… That’s your work. – W.M. 🏳️‍🌈,” he concluded the note.

Prison Break had a four-season run on Fox that ended in 2009. The show was revived in 2017 for a nine-episode fifth season. While an additional season was in the works, nothing has been confirmed for another return.

Wentworth Miller is heading to the White House!

The 47-year-old Prison Break actor has joined the cast of Madam Secretary for season 6, TV Line reports.

As previously reported, Madam Secretary will begin after a time jump that skips over Elizabeth McCord’s (Tea Leoni) presidential campaign and election. The premiere will find the former Secretary of State about to mark her first hundred days in the Oval Office.

Wentworth will be playing Senator Mark Hanson, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committ, who hates that Elizabeth has been elected president.

The sixth and final season of Madam Secretary will premiere on Sunday, October 6th on CBS.

Great news for fans of the Fox show Prison Break!

“We’re developing a new iteration of Prison Break. We’re really excited. We’ll be happy to share when we have more. We definitely have one in development,” Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn told the press at the TCA.

It’s unclear if the show’s stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, and Sarah Wayne Callies will be involved in the new iteration, but Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman told EW, “No, it would not be an entirely new cast. It’s very early at this stage. Paul Scheuring had an idea for another season, and he came and pitched it to Michael and the team. They were excited about it, but it’s super early. We haven’t seen any written materials at all.”

Prison Break aired originally from 2005 to 2009, and then a fifth season aired in 2017.
