The Weeknd Comments on 'Cathartic' Album That Many Believe Is About His Breakups From Selena Gomez & Bella Hadid
The Weeknd spoke briefly about his 2018 EP, My Dear Melancholy, during his Esquire cover story. That album is thought to have a lot of references to his two high-profile relationships with both Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid.
The magazine said he “[danced] away from questions about what was going on at the time,” but he did have a bit to say about that time period in his life and why he released the album with only 6 songs.
“The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this… whatever…It was just like this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on this situation,” he said.
He was also asked if writing the songs on the album made him feel better and he responded, “Yeah, of course. I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t.”
Fans believe this lyric from the album, “I hope you know this dick is still an option. . . . You were an equestrian, so ride it like a champion,” is about Bella and “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life” is about Selena.
There was some drama between Bella and Selena earlier this year, if you missed it.
