Lance Bass Explains Why Colton Underwood Will Face Backlash from Gay Community

Lance Bass is opening up about Colton Underwood‘s coming out and why he expects the reality star to face backlash from the gay community.

The former NSYNC singer opened up on the latest episode of The Ben & Ashley I. Almost Famous Podcast. He said that he relates to Colton because “90% of my fans were women, and they all thought I was straight. I made my money off women and singing about love and using that market. So me coming out, it was scary… cause now everyone is gonna see me as a liar..”

Lance also explained why Colton was receiving backlash on social media on the day he came out.

“This gay community is very diverse, but we can also be very fickle. He’s definitely gonna get a lot of backlash from the community at first. Not the majority, but there is a small percentage of the community that’s just gonna not like the fact that he came out this way, that he’s monetizing the experience,” Lance said, referring to the Netflix docu-series that is reportedly in the works.

Lance continued, “They don’t think he deserves this attention and one of those reasons is, and this is what I experienced when I came out… when you first come out, most people have no clue about the LGBT community. They don’t know what the issues are because they’ve been so separated from that on purpose. So when someone comes out as a public figure, so many people immediately go, ‘It’s too late.’ They don’t like to support it because they don’t feel like you know what you’re talking about yet. But I don’t think Colton is trying to lead that charge of trying to be the spokesperson for the LGBTQ community.”

“I see him taking responsibility of learning about the community, sharing his story with his documentary,” he continued. “A lot of people are like great, it’s all for the money, he’s doing a documentary… well, yeah, that could be, but for me, seeing a documentary like that is only going to help the community. Every story you see on television or in a film of a gay character, a different person can relate to that. We haven’t had too many representations of a gay person on television that came from this world. This crazy sport world where you have to hide it.”

Lance also said how some older people in the gay community, who experienced some incredible hardships in the past, sometimes have a negative opinion of younger people who are coming out today.

“A lot of that generation looks at us youngins, especially even Colton, the young young ones, that they don’t understand where the community came from and that they’re not willing to understand. But you have to give him a chance. Like he just came out. Let’s see what he does with it,” Lance said.

In his GMA interview, Colton explained why he remained a virgin throughout his adult life.
