Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff are showing their support at Pride!
The Vice President and Second Gentleman joined fellow marchers at the Capital Pride Parade on Saturday afternoon (June 12) in Washington, D.C.
While marching in the parade, Kamala wore a shirt that had “Love is Love” written across it, while Doug sported a T-shirt that had “Love first” written on it in rainbow colors.
The Second Couple’s appearance at the Pride parade marks the first time ever a sitting Vice President has marched in Pride event.
Kamala briefly spoke at the event, advocating for the passage of the Equality Act while expressing her and President Joe Biden‘s commitment to advancing LGBTQ+ rights.
“We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We need, still, protections around employment and housing,” Kamala said, via NBC Washington. “There is so much more work to do, and I know we are committed.”
A few months ago, Kamala became the first Vice President to receive this very special honor.

President Biden is marking a grim moment in the fight against COVID-19.
The President of the United States spoke to the nation from the White House on Monday (February 22) after it was confirmed that 500,000 Americans have now passed away because of the virus.
After speaking to the nation, Biden was joined by First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff for a candlelight vigil outside of the White House.
“We must end the politics and misinformation that’s divided families, communities and the country,” Biden said during his speech. “It’s cost too many lives already. It’s not Democrats and Republicans who are dying from the virus. It’s our fellow Americans. It’s our neighbors, our friends, our mothers, our fathers, our sons, our daughters, husbands, wives. We have to fight this together as one people, as the United States of America. That’s the only way we’re going to beat this virus, I promise you.”
Biden opened up about the tragedies he’s suffered while comforting those who have lost loved ones to the virus.
“For the loved ones left behind: I know all too well. I know what it’s like to not be there when it happens. I know what it’s like when you are there holding their hands, there’s a look in their eye and they slip away,” he said. For those that don’t know, Biden’s first wife and infant daughter died in a car crash and his son Beau died in 2015 after a battle with brain cancer.

It’s official – Second Gentleman is the newest political term following the Presidential Inauguration held just last week.
Second Gentleman has been added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, as Doug Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris‘ husband, assumes the role in the White House.
“Well, now it’s official. @MerriamWebster just added ‘Second Gentleman’ to the dictionary,” Mr. Emhoff tweeted from his official Second Gentleman twitter.
He added, “I might be the first, but I won’t be the last.”

Doug is the first Second Gentleman in the history of United States government, as Kamala is also the first female Vice President.
Kamala can also get credit for coining the term, as she said it during an interview with CNN last fall.
“I think that the term has evolved into the ‘second gentleman,’” she shared, adding that she’d “call him honey”.
Doug‘s daughter, Ella, was also in the news this week. See the exciting thing that happened to her here!
