John Boyega Calls Out Jo Malone & Steps Down as Brand's Global Ambassador

John Boyega has decided to step down as the global ambassador for the British cologne company Jo Malone after they replaced him for a campaign in China, but still used his concepts.

The 28-year-old Star Wars actor came up with the concept for his commercial for Jo Malone, which he also directed. The brand reshot the commercial with Chinese actor Liu Haoran without getting John‘s consent.

“I have decided to step down as Jo Malone‘s global ambassador. When I joined the brand as their first male global ambassador last year, I created the short film we used to launch the campaign. It won the Fragrance Foundation Virtual awards 2020 for Best Media Campaign,” John wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Their decision to replace my campaign in China by using my concepts and substituting a local brand ambassador for me, without either my consent or prior notice, was wrong. The film celebrated my personal story– showcasing my hometown, including my friends and featuring my family.”

John continued, “While many brands understandably use a variety of global and local ambassadors, dismissively trading out one’s culture this way is not something I can condone. It’s back to back but I assure you this will be dealt with swiftly. I don’t have time for nonsense. We press on and strong. Stay blessed people.”

John Boyega Explains His 'Star Wars' Experience: 'Do Not Bring Out a Black Character & Then Have Them Pushed to the Side'

John Boyega is revealing his experience working on the new Star Wars movies playing the role of Finn.

“You get yourself involved in projects and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up,” the 28-year-old actor told British GQ. “You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know f*ck all.”

He added, “So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

“Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, ‘Black this and black that and you shouldn’t be a Stormtrooper.’ Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that I’m this way. That’s my frustration,” John added.

John recently revealed if he would ever return to the Star Wars universe.

John Boyega Books Role in 'Borderland' With Jodie Turner-Smith, Felicity Jones & More

John Boyega has booked his first movie role after taking part in a Black Lives Matter protest.

The 28-year-old actor will star in Borderland, according to Deadline.

The film will follow an Irish paramilitary, Michael, who witnesses the shooting of his pregnant wife at the hands of an SAS sergeant named Tempest when a border ambush goes wrong.

When Tempest is sent back to London to lead a covert counter-terrorist operation, Michael joins a ruthless active service unit (ASU) wreaking havoc in the capital. For Michael, the mission is personal – to hunt down Tempest – and he’ll stop at nothing to avenge his wife’s death.

John will star as Tempest in the movie, opposite Jack Reynor, Jodie Turner-Smith and Felicity Jones.

The site reports that filming is expected to start in early 2021 in the UK.

This is the first role for John after he shared that he might not have a career after attending and speaking out during a protest.

John Boyega Thanks Supporters For 'Love' After Speech at Protest But Says Black Community Still Needs 'Everyone'

John Boyega is sharing his thanks to supporters after giving a passionate speech ahead of the weekend at a protest in London.

“I want to thank you all for the love and support you have shared over the last few days, although nothing I have done is for praise, or is truly even enough, in the grand scheme of things,” the 28-year-old actor shared on Instagram.

John adds that the fight isn’t over though. He continued, “This is an intense time for our community, and the most important thing is for us to maintain momentum and not lose sight of how critical it is to pursue long term solutions and commitments, for the sake of our generation, and the next. Our individual pursuits of success and belonging remain, but now more than ever, it’s important to use this movement as fuel to inspire new ways of thinking, building, and growing, together. I believe any great movement starts with a renewal of the mind.”

“I’ll continue to use my platform to fight against the injustices and inequalities in our community, no matter what,” he promises. “Nonetheless, one man can’t do it alone – I need you, and we need each other!”

John concludes that the Black community needs “everyone, across industry’s, soci-economic backgrounds, countries, to unite with a shared goal of REAL change.”
