A journalist who is accusing Johnny Depp‘s Jeanne du Barry director Maiwenn of spitting on him is speaking out about the encounter.

Last month Edwy Plenel filed a lawsuit accusing the director and star of Johnny‘s big comeback movie of assault.

She reportedly spat on his face while he was at a restaurant, a fact that Maiwenn has seemingly confirmed herself in an interview.

Edwy issued his first interview about the encounter, explaining why he thinks it happened and his decision to file a lawsuit.

The 59-year-old actor posed for photos with the film’s director, Maïwenn, as well as some of his co-stars including Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory, and Melvil Poupaud, among others. THR reports that Johnny arrived right on time at 7pm local time and spent over 5 minutes signing autographs for fans.

This is opening day of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which is often attended by lots of A-list stars.

This year, the festival runs until May 27, so you can expect lots of photos from the premieres and screenings over the next few days!

Who do you most want to watch in a movie theater? A research group polled consumers and asked which movie stars they would actually go to the movies, in person, to see a film live in the theater.

The list is interesting to executives because the top 20 actors and actresses chosen are almost entirely above the age of 40 (with the exception of 1 name.) Respondents were able to choose 5 names when asked.

Today marks one year since the start of the 2022 Amber Heard and Johnny Depp trial.

If you don’t know, Johnny sued his ex wife, Amber, for $50 million in damages after she published a 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post that said she became a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Amber never mentioned Johnny by name in the piece, but his lawyers argued that it was about him. Johnny has continually denied all allegations of domestic abuse.

Johnny largely won the lawsuit, which wrapped up in June 2022.

Johnny Depp is making his comeback to the big screen in the new movie Jeanne du Barry and he worked with French filmmaker Maiwenn on the project.

Maiwenn not only stars in the title role, she also wrote and directed the movie, which is set as the opening night selection for the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

The 46-year-old filmmaker and actress is now being sued for allegedly assaulting journalist Edwy Plenel, the editor-in-chief of Mediapart magazine.
