Showtime Axes 'Penny Dreadful' Spinoff 'City of Angels'

Showtime has opted to cancel Penny Dreadful: The City of Angels.

The network announced the news on Friday (August 21), via Variety.

“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” they shared in a statement about the future of the series. “We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”

The second season was set in 1938 Los Angeles where a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Natalie Dormer, Rory Kinnear, and Adriana Barraza also starred.

The trailer for the second season premiered just days after the pandemic forced fans of the show into lockdown.

'Penny Dreadful' Revived at Showtime with 'City of Angels' Follow-Up Show!

Penny Dreadful is being revived at Showtime with a brand new spinoff, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels!

The new series will take place in Los Angeles in 1938, as opposed to the original series, which took place in Victorian-era London.

“PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the PENNY DREADFUL London storylines,” John Logan, Penny Dreadful creator said in a statement. “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of PENNY DREADFUL, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

“Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, [the show] will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop,” the press release read.

No word yet who will star. The original series starred Josh Hartnett and Eva Green.

'Penny Dreadful' Ends After Season 3, Eva Green Reacts

The Showtime series Penny Dreadful has officially ended after the third season.

In a surprising moment at the end of the two-hour finale on Sunday (June 19), “The End” was flashed after a shocking death.

SPOILER ALERT – The series ended with Eva Green‘s character Vanessa Ives being killed by Josh Hartnett‘s character Ethan Chandler.

“I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end, that’s all she wrote,” series creator John Logan told Deadline. “The whole idea to have this be the end of the series applies to all of the characters not just for Vanessa Ives and I felt the ending was for Malcolm and Ethan was Ethan got the father that he wanted and Sir Malcolm got the family he needed and together they came to a nice thing of stasis.”

Eva and Josh both talk about the series ending in a behind the scenes video released after the finale aired.

“I’m going to miss Vanessa,” Eva said. “It’s going to be hard to kind of leave her behind. To be able to play such a beautiful character is a gift for an actor and I’ve been so lucky.”
