Pixar's 'Elemental': The Numbers Are In - Opening Weekend Box Office Revealed

Elemental is unfortunately not burning up at the box office.

The movie debuted to a record-worst $29.6 million at the box office in its opening weekend, marking the lowest three-day weekend start in the history of Pixar, adjusting 1995′s Toy Story opening for inflation, via THR.

Elemental‘s projected four-day domestic opening over the long Juneteenth holiday weekend is $33.4 million.

One of the big issues that Disney and Pixar are up against is original vs. established IP, and having success with introducing new stories.

“Original versus branded IP is also a crucial issue for Walt Disney Animation Studios, which saw Strange World fall flat last year. Disney execs will be watching closely to see if Disney Animation’s original upcoming Thanksgiving offering Wish fares can break the curse facing original animated fare,” THR also notes in their analysis.

Elemental is an all-new, original feature film set in Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together. The story introduces Ember (voice of Leah Lewis), a fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun and sappy guy named Wade (voice of Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

Pixar's 'Elemental' Will Premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival

Pixar’s Elemental will have its world premiere screening at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 27.

The animated film will close out the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Disney and Pixar’s Elemental is an original feature film set in Element City, where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

Leah Lewis voices Ember, and Mamoudou Athie is the voice of Wade.

“As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honor to have Pixar back on La Croisette,” said Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer. “Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, Elemental is so funny, full of heart and, frankly, stunning to see. It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen and I love that it’ll make its world premiere at Cannes.”

“For many years, the Cannes Film Festival has welcomed animated films from around the world,” said Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, Cannes Film Festival. “Pixar Animation Studios, with Up—directed by Pete Docter—made Cannes history by opening the 62nd edition of the Festival in 2009. It was a wonderful event! This is another great opportunity to present the amazing Elemental on the closing of this 76th Cannes Film Festival and to think about our lives in such a powerful way.”

A trailer for the film was released last month. Elemental opens with Pixar’s all new short, Carl’s Date.

Elemental will be released in theaters on June 16.

Johnny Depp‘s comeback movie Jeanne du Barry is set as the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s opening night film.

Disney & Pixar's 'Elemental' - Watch the Trailer!

Elemental is coming!

Disney and Pixar just released the official trailer for the highly anticipated new movie, due out on June 16, 2023.

The film is based in Element City, where each element – air, earth, water and fire – live in their own separate neighborhoods, until two particular people meet in a sort of Romeo and Juliet type manner, as the different elements don’t really co-mingle with each other.

Here’s a synopsis: Ember, a quick-witted and fiery woman who’s always stayed close to home in Firetown, finally ventures out of her comfort zone to explore this spectacular world born from the imaginations of Pixar’s filmmakers and specifically crafted for the big-screen experience. Element City is inspired by big cities around the globe and embraces theorized contributions from each elemental community—from giant pine-tree-like buildings and waterfall skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.

Leah Lewis voices Ember, and Mamoudou Athie is the voice of Wade.

A live action version of Hercules is officially a go, but that’s not the only animated film from Disney that’s being turned into a live action movie.
