Regina King Makes History at Venice Film Festival with Her Directorial Debut, Which Got Rave Reviews

Regina King is the first Black woman to direct a movie selected to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The Oscar-winning actress is making her directorial debut with the movie One Night in Miami, which is having its premiere at the festival this week.

Regina is not in attendance at the festival due to the pandemic, but she appeared at the press conference via Zoom to discuss the honor of being included. She noted that if her film fails, it will make it difficult for another Black woman to have the same chance in the future.

“Unfortunately, across the world, that’s how things seem to work. One woman gets a shot and if she does not succeed, it shuts thing down for years until someone else gets a shot,” she said (via Variety). “I am so grateful for our film to be a part of the festival but I really, really want it to perform well. There’s so much talent out there — so many talented directors — so if One Night in Miami gets it done here, you’ll get to see a lot more of us.”

We’re glad to report that the movie is indeed succeeding and it’s earning some rave reviews at the festival. With just 10 reviews so far, the movie is currently at a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Regina is nominated for an Emmy this month for her work on the HBO series Watchmen.

Here's Why Regina King Is 'Very Careful' About Telling People to 'Stay Home' Amid Coronavirus

Regina King sat down to speak with Reese Witherspoon for a Variety Studio: Actors on Actors event and one subject that was touched upon was the reality of being told to stay at home amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Regina spoke about the reality of how some people can simply not stay home every day due to having to make money to support themselves and their families.

“At the end of the day, the reality is the reality. There’s not going to be a vaccine anytime soon. We have to understand that while we’re telling people, ‘Stay home, stay home,’ there are people out there who are not in financial situations that — to say that to them is almost insulting, coming from certain messengers,” Regina said. “So I try to be very careful about saying that too much, because I do understand that some people don’t know where their next meal is going to be right now in this moment.”

During the talk, Reese also praised Regina for the changes she wants to make in Hollywood, saying, “The thing I love about you is the stacking of achievements isn’t just for your own gain and benefit. That you are determined to make a lot of change in our business by committing to hire more women, more people of color — to put them in the driver’s seat. I think there’s such an alignment between a lot of women of our generation, about how we do not want to leave this business the way we found it. And you feel it, right? I feel like if we all look like we’re busy and doing three and four and five jobs, it’s because we’re trying to make up for lost time.”

Regina King Has 'Ongoing Conversations' with Her Son About Police Brutality

Regina King is opening up about raising a young black man.

The 48-year-old Oscar winner appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she opened up about the racial injustice protests, and talked about having difficult conversations with son Ian Alexander Jr, 24, about how to interact with police.

“I think in most homes, black homes, it’s not just a conversation. It’s an ongoing conversation,” Regina shared. The anger that they have, it just compounds every time something like this happens. It’s another moment that’s telling them that they’re not worthy … their lives are not valuable once they walk outside of the comfort of their homes.”

Regina shares Ian Jr with her ex-husband Ian Alexander, whom she was married to from 1997 to 2007.

“The conversation shifts every time,” Regina continued, “because you have to find a way to support their feelings and make sure that you’re letting them know that you hear them and that you do mirror the same sentiment. But you don’t want them to do anything that’s going to put themselves in a situation that they may not come back home, they may not talk to you again.”
