Sarah Silverman Wasn't Surprised By 'Imagine' Video Backlash, Says Kristen Wiig Apologized to Her

Sarah Silverman is speaking out about the backlash that the celeb-filled “Imagine” video received at the beginning of quarantine and how the video’s organizer, Kristen Wiig, sent her an apology email.

In the video, Sarah, Kristen, Gal Gadot, and many more celebs performed lines from the song “Imagine” while at home to send hope to people around the world.

Sarah talked about the video on Andy Cohen‘s SiriusXM show.

“Listen, I’m not trying to separate myself from this, but…” she started saying with a laugh. “You know, I did a movie with Gal, and actually Kristen Wiig was the one who contacted me, which I think Gal asked her to. And Kristen Wiig is the sh-t. So she emailed me and she goes, ‘Well, we’re all gonna sing “Imagine.”‘”

“And I wrote her back and I go ‘Imagine really?’ And then I go, ‘is it for a thing? Is it, what’s the call to action?’ And she, and she, and she’s so sweet, you know? I mean, she’s so funny. She’s also so sweet. And she goes, ‘it’s just to like cheer people up.’ And then I couldn’t say no, because one, it was the beginning of quarantine. Like there’s no saying no to anyone because you can’t, there’s no excuse for it,” Sarah added.

She continued, “You know are you going to say no to Kristen Wiig. She is so lovely and she is so cool. So I tried to like, make my part funny at least, you know, like I just feel like I have no currency unless I’m being funny, which is ironic considering this appearance…But, yeah it’s funny because she emailed me after and she’s like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ It was well intentioned, but like, yeah, a little tone death, but it really came from a nice place I think.”

Sarah said “no” when asked if she was surprised by the backlash.

Another star of the video has revealed a lot of details about the video as well.

“As the world was shutting down, I thought I should start playing video games again. It just made sense. This is the time. So I went to GameStop — it was still open — and I bought a console and couple of games. And I got really into this one, it’s not the latest one but I love it — Call of Duty: WWII,” she explained on the show.

Although Sarah didn’t name him by name, she said she knew him “peripherally” through mutual friends, and he DMed her on Twitter offering to play online together.

“We were both quarantining. So every night at 7:05 — I was in New York, so at 7 we would bang the pots and pans out on the fire escape. It really became just like a group primal scream. It was actually kind of beautiful to be in New York at that time. Then at 7:05, I’d put my headset on and I’d kill Nazis with this guy. Yadda yadda yadda, we’re boyfriend and girlfriend!” she went on to say.

“He came out here and so he’s living out here and it’s great and make sweet love. I feel like I’m jinxing it by talking about it on Ellen, but I can’t help myself!”
